Two American Boys with the Allied Armies, by Major Sherman Crockett.  New York: Hurst & Co., 1915.  $12.00.

Amos and Jack search war-torn Europe for Amos’s older brother, whom he believes has enlisted in the British Army.  The author leads his young readers on a tour of Europe as he recounts the adventures of the two young American cousins, who encounter Allied and German soldiers, and noncombatants on both sides.

Hardback, 5 x 8 inches, 305 pp.  Very good condition, with color dust jacket in protective mylar cover.  Dust jacket is a bit frayed, and has stain on back.  Pages slightly yellowed.  Overall, in excellent condition for a young person’s book almost 100 years old. # 0903-078.

 

The Arizona Biltmore Hotel History and Guide.  Phoenix: The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, 1974.  $40.00.

In 1927, when Phoenix had a population of 39,000, Frank Lloyd Wright drew up plans for a luxury hotel, including decoration, fabrics and furnishings.  Completed and opened in 1929, it numbered among its many amenities the largest gold leaf ceiling in the world.  Reconstructed in 1973 after a fire, the Biltmore remains one of Phoenix’s premiere hotel/resorts.   Illustrated with some of Lloyd Wright’s original renderings.

Paperback, 8 x 9inches, 20 pp.  In very good condition.  #0903-052.

China Talks, by John King Fairbank.  Boston: Harvard University Press/ Mass Communications, 1978.  $135.00.

Recorded lectures by eminent China scholar John K. Fairbank to the Harvard Alumni College in July 1973 and August 1978, with discussions of each.. Professor Fairbank recounts Chinese history and culture, from the Confucian social order through the Cultural Revolution, particularly as it relates to United States foreign policy.  

Six one-hour audio cassettes, with a four page study guide containing questions and bibliography; all in a red vinyl binder.  Tapes and study guide are in very good condition; vinyl is separating at top of binder and back has picked up transfer of document on which it once sat.  #0903-051.

Kid Thomas New Orleans Jazz 1973.  Newport Beach, CA: Smoky Mary Phonograph Company, 1973.  $10.00.  

Jazz, blues and Gospel music, featuring trumpeter “Kid Thomas” Valentine, who was 78 when this was recorded at the Golden Gate Elks’ Lodge in Algiers, Louisiana.  Other performers include: Willie Humphrey on clarinet, Frank Demond, trombone, Narvin Kimball, Tenor Banjo, Chester Zardas, Bass, Josiah “Cie” Frazier, Drums, and Gospel singers Sister Anne Pavageau and Sister Alma Anderson.

33 rpm LP, with original jacket and sleeve, in average playable condition.  Record has a few scratches; brown jacket is in very good condition.   # 0903-079.

The Summer of a Dormouse,  by John Mortimer.  Viking Press, 2001, advance uncorrected proofs.  ISBN: 0-670-89986-0.  $20.00

An earlier rendering of volume three of Mortimer’s autobiography, the book was originally subtitled Another Part of Life.   This was revised to A Year of Growing Old Disgracefully when the book was published in 2001In it, the author confesses what it feels like to be 75 and afflicted with many of the impairments of aging, yet to feel like a child.  The popular author of the Rumpole of the Bailey series, plus many plays and screenplays died in January 2009.

Paperback, 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches, 191 pp.  Good condition; major flaw is creases at top and bottom of front cover.  #0903-081
