Sedona Public Library:
- 12 Internet-ready computers available to the general public with one-hour sessions
- 4 email computers with 15 minute sessions
- 5 Children’s computers with 30 minute sessions
- Patrons may have unlimited sessions as long as availability permits
- The Library also has 8 Patron Access Catalog (PAC) computers for accessing the catalog of the entire Yavapai Library Network; a network of over 40 libraries in Yavapai County sharing resources.
Village Service Center:
- 2 Internet-ready computers available to the general public with 45 minute sessions
- 2 Patron Access Catalog (PAC) computers for accessing the catalog of the entire Yavapai Library Network; a network of over 40 libraries in Yavapai County sharing resources. (Please note: these are the same computers as the Internet-ready computers. Patrons may need to wait for an available computer, or a staff person may be able to access specific information when available.)
Sedona Public Library has also implemented a wireless “Hot Spot”, allowing users to access the Internet from their own computers if they are within 300 feet of any of the Wireless Access Points at the Library (basically, anywhere in the building). These Wireless Access Points use the 2.4 gigahertz frequency, and the wireless Ethernet standard known as 802.11b. The Village of Oak Creek Service Center uses the 802.11g standard which is backward compatible with 802.11b.
In order to access the wireless system, users must use a wireless 802.11b or g adapter, which is built into most laptops these days. If patrons do not have a wireless adapter but do have a laptop, they may wish to check out and install a wireless adapter, available from the Reference Desk (not available at the Village of Oak Creek Service Center). In order to install this, laptops will need an available PCMCIA slot or USB port with a CD ROM drive.
With this wireless technology, patrons will be able to surf the Web at their own leisure, without having to worry about availability or time restraints. A patron can find and/or place a hold on a book without waiting for an available PAC computer. Those traveling without a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) can come to the library and conduct business. Those who might have family requiring services at the Sedona Medical Center (right down the street), can send off a quick email to keep loved ones informed. Those who already have an ISP, may want to use the Webmail services provided by their ISP. Those without an ISP, may want to sign up for one of the many free webmail providers on the Internet. With this technology, a patron will be able to do almost anything they normally can from home.
Those who have used a Hot Spot will know how easy it is to use. When you walk into an area with a strong enough signal your adapter should automatically pick up all the information it needs. You can open your browser and surf the Internet as you would at home. For those whose adapters that might not automatically pick up all the settings, this is what you will need to know:
- For Sedona Public Library
The Service Set Identifier (SSID) for the Access Point in the Library is: “101”
The Channel is: 11 and
Wired Equivalency Protocol (WEP) is: disabled.
- For Village Service Center
The Service Set Identifier (SSID) for the Access Point in the Library is: “SPL”
The Channel is: 11 and
Wired Equivalency Protocol (WEP) is: disabled.
If you need help, please ask at the Reference Desk.
