Reference Librarian/Latino Services
General Statement
Under the general direction of the Library Director or Head Librarian, this employee performs responsible professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing and managing a comprehensive program of services to library users. This position holds the classification of Librarian 2. The work involves planning, developing and coordinating services and resources designed to serve the reference and bibliographic needs of the public, with a focus on the Latino community. The work also includes outreach efforts to the Latino community as well as program planning assistance to the Youth Services Librarian. Spanish language skills are a must. The work requires the exercise of considerable professional skill, initiative and independent judgment. It also involves staff training and development.
Major Duties
- Provides reference services to the public
- Trains and supervises personnel of lesser Classification
- Participates in the selection of materials for the Latino community
- Provides readers advisory service
- Instructs patrons in the use of the Online Public Access Computers and other library resources
- Searches online databases and the Internet, trains staff, volunteers and the public in the use of these tools
- Participates as required in the preparation of the annual budget
- Interprets library rules and policies
- Assists in monitoring the behavior and conduct of library users
Minor Duties
- Designs, compiles and annotates bibliographies
- Resolves office equipment malfunctions
- Other reasonable duties as required
Abilities, Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of the professional practices, procedures and techniques of library science
- Knowledge of Reference books and materials, and their use
- Knowledge of book classification and arrangements
- Knowledge of library rules and regulations
- Skills in planning and supervising the work of others
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Ability to interpret library resources and service to the library user
Experience and Training
A Master’s degree in Library Science and/or any combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates the potential ability to perform the duties of the position
Professional Responsibilities
Attends professional meetings, maintains memberships in professional library associations and participates in their activities. Keeps informed of current trends and developments affecting libraries.
Technical Services Librarian
General Statement
Under the general direction of the Library Director, this employee performs responsible professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing and managing all aspects of processing materials into the Library’s collection, as well as maintenance of the holdings database. This position holds the classification of Librarian 3. The work requires the exercise of considerable professional skill, initiative and independent judgment. Work includes public service, collection maintenance and supervision and training of staff and volunteers.
Major Duties
- Place orders for library materials electronically
- Ensure the proper processing of new items as they arrive in the Library
- Guides the donation team with decisions pertaining to donated items, including when to keep and/or replace items with donated materials, training of new searchers as necessary, etc.
- Catalogs or ensures the proper cataloging of all materials being added to the collection
- Resolves software cataloging problems with the automated system
- Supervises database projects to improve access to the catalog
- Oversees scheduling of that department
- Maintains the flow of materials through the department
- Answers technical questions on format, proper Dewey numbers and subject headings
- Fixes improperly cataloged items
- Supervises all aspects of spine label and book preparation, book covering, withdrawing books, mending and inventory
Minor Duties
- Works with the public as needed
- Assists in monitoring the behavior and conduct of library users
- Participates in collection maintenance and collection development
- Other reasonable duties as required
Abilities, Skills and Knowledge
- Familiarity with Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and Dewey Decimal Classification system
- Working knowledge of MARC cataloging procedures
- Working knowledge of library automation systems
- Experience working with computers and problem solving within that realm
- Prior experience in Technical Services department with exposure to all facets, including new book order processing, donations processing, cataloging, spine labels, covering, mending and database maintenance
- Prior supervisory and managerial experience
- Ability to organize, schedule and manage several projects and procedures at once
- Ability to train and work effectively with staff and volunteers
Experience and Training
A Master’s degree in Library Science and previous library experience and/or any combination of training, education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
